TOM is a portrait of a man in a city, and is an ode to the art of looking.
The performance stimulates the viewer to let go of his rational view and his own structured life and viewing codes. In this crossover, theater, visual art and sound blend into and reinforce each other. TOM shows the intimacy and intensity of two male bodies in a refined and seemingly simple imagery.
About the video
Joery Erna didn't make a 'making of', but his portrait of Karel as human being and maker during the creation process. The documentary is a time document, an autonomous work alongside the new performance TOM.
About BARRY
BARRY was founded in 2015 to support Karel Tuytschaever’s original work; to produce it, and to disseminate it. Taking as it’s leading principle a passion and fascination for the body, BARRY shows creations that find a balance between performative and exhibitive work, always acknowledging the auditive and the visual. BARRY’s imagery matches a vocabulary that puts architecture of space & time in the foreground, making it virtually unavoidable for the audience’s observation. As are the bodies that are put on stage. From his transdisciplinary habitat, Karel moves to explore the similarities of performers’ bodies within the ever changing performing arts. He needs this research in order to help him develop as a creator in designing new and boundary breaking forms of embodiment. BARRY explores bodies according to principles of identity and sexuality, always taking intimacy as the denominator. The resulting hybrid body of works contains (dance) performances, next to installations, theater texts, a publication of research results, and films.
